Williams' "Food for Learning: Rhythm and Movement" project uses an innovative teaching method, called the Orff-Schulwerk model, to engage students in learning while participating in the performing arts. As part of an integrated curriculum approach, students learn to express themselves using their voices, body movements and musical instruments, and these skills then are incorporated into more traditional academic studies such as reading, writing and math. As one of the main components of the program, students use their skills to create performances for their classmates and community. This creative approach to learning helps Westside Village students find the academic and social success that they haven't found in traditional school settings.
