Jaramillo's "Partnerships in Reading" project pairs at-risk grade-school students to improve reading skills and increase science knowledge. Each pair reads a book related to science, participates in an accelerated reading comprehension test, and gives a class presentation on the book. The project employs a motivating method for students to read about science while fostering their desire to gain information independently. In addition to increased cross-curriculum reading comprehension, students gain new social skills as they become more confident presenting information to others.
