“On the FASTT (Fluency and Automaticity through Systematic Teaching with Technology) Track to Fluency” was developed by Reis to expand students’ knowledge network by building on existing knowledge. Developing quick recall of basic facts including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division is believed to be a critical part of having a strong foundation in mathematics. The FASTT Math program automatically differentiates instruction based on students’ independent fluency levels with customized 10-minute sessions. Students will be assessed on basic facts and how much time it takes them to answer each fact correctly. By measuring the differences of how fast a student can type a number and answer a problem, the program can accurately determine facts that are being recalled by memory from those that are being solved using a counting strategy such as "finger counting". Reis hopes the program will allow students to become fluent in their basic facts and go deeper into more complex concepts.
