Gardiner's winning program, "Electricity, Engineering and Economics," is a multi-disciplinary based learning program created for eighth-grade students at Saint Timothy School. Students in the program will design and build a house to scale and wire it for electricity using batteries as the source of power. Gardiner will present the students with a problem. They will have the task of learning about electricity and scale drawings as well as using different types of circuits, putting in a ceiling fan and doorbell, and finding a use for an electric motor. Students will also practice making circuits with mini light bulbs, buzzers, motors, batteries, and wire. An imaginary loan of $10,000 will be given to students to furnish the house. The imaginary furnishing will come from researching online and in catalogs. The students will be required to spend as close to the $10,000 as possible without exceeding the amount. They will use percents to apply discounts, sales tax, and interest rates. The students will learn what electricity is all about and become informed about the economy and obtaining and repaying loans. Gardiner lives in Columbus.
