Carol Novotney

2005
Federal Way, WA
Mirror Lake Elementary School
Novotney recognized an opportunity for students to apply course material towards the improvement of the health and wellness of the Puget Sound community. Supported by other teachers, she created the Marine Ecosystem program, a yearlong, cross discipline thematic study of the pollution of plankton in marine environments. Teachers will work in partnership with the Highline Community College Marine Biology Department to create a curriculum that teaches important lessons using national and state standards. The students will then produce a variety of deliverables to reflect their finding s, including producing a marine magazine, developing an interactive website and organizing and participating in the school's first-ever science fair. Novotney is a resident of Tacoma.
