Sutton was looking for a way to end the semester by solidifying key messages taught during the term of her physics class. As a part of her program, " the Rube Goldberg Project," she asked her students to construct and analyze a Rube Goldberg device, a series of complex steps working together to perform a simple task. Groups of three or four selected a theme and a finale, and completed theoretical calculations while designing each component to predict initial and final energies of the projectile. The actual energy transferred was then analyzed on a computer program, showing students how to problem-solve unexpected outcomes. The project incorporates aspects for visual, auditory and kinesthetic learners, so each student can contribute their unique skills to the success of the project. Although challenging, the project has been a great success and many have said it was the most meaningful project they'd ever done. Sutton plans to use funds received to supply all necessary materials and tools for next year's project and to provide better technology to enhance the value of the students' work. Sutton lives in Renton.
