Carvalho's "How Do You Spell Science? B-E-N-C-H-M-A-R-K!" project engages rural high school students in experiments both in and out of the classroom using equipment and techniques often available to students only on the college level. While completing various chemical, physical, and earth science labs, students use computers to collect, store, and analyze data gathered by Vernier LabPro probes and Global Positioning System units. They also give multimedia presentations to the city council and maintain a departmental Web site. By participating in the project, students gain experience and knowledge and improve their performance on statewide science and technology benchmark tests.
