Oley Valley High School
Liskey's winning program idea, "Air Repair", will help about 300 chemistry and environmental science students in grades nine through 12 uncover possible links between student health and poor air quality in the small farming community of Oley Valley. According to Liskey, Oley Valley has some of the highest asthma rates in the country. New state standards for science and technology require that all students learn data collection and analysis skills as well as computer interfacing techniques. In order to meet these objectives, Liskey's project involves using state-of-the-art data logging equipment to examine the effects of prolonged exposure to air pollution on plants in and around school grounds. Data collected will be used to help students and members of the surrounding community gain valuable insights into the health and wellbeing of local school children. Liskey plans to share findings with the local Environmental Protection Agency to address the effects of development on local agriculture. He hopes to secure increased funding for the program so at least 200 more students at the middle school level will benefit. Liskey is a resident of Fleetwood.
