Lequire's "Beam Me Up/Handheld" program allows Academically and Intellectually Gifted (AIG) students to use handheld PCs to teach English to Limited English Proficient (LEP) students. In return, LEP students teach AIG students a second language. Students plan two 30-minute lessons each week that focus on vocabulary, word families, spelling patterns and phonics. The school's LEP student enrollment has steadily increased since 1999. The project utilizes student-led instruction to address the need for assistance, helps LEP students adjust to their new culture and learning environment, and provides enrichment activities for AIG students that go beyond standard curriculum.
