Bethany Seal
Seal’s innovative teaching idea, “Cross-Curricular Literature,” involves asking students at the end of her English Composition class to select their favorite literary text from the year and design, build and run a functional escape room based on their analysis of that text. All aspects of the escape room will be inspired by the students’ chosen text; however, they will also incorporate cross-curricular connections to other subjects: science, technology, engineering, math, art, graphic design and business. By working “across subjects,” students will be exposed to connections between topics and will better understand the applicability to the real world. Through this unique project, supported by funding from the Voya Unsung Heroes grant, students will also demonstrate their understanding of literary analysis and showcase their creativity and problem-solving skills by working collaboratively with one another in small groups.
