April Yasaka-Tandal and Allen Golden
Yasaka-Tandal’s and Golden’s innovative teaching idea, “Growing Futures: A Dive Into Aquaponics and Hydro,” aims to introduce low-income middle school students to the innovative and sustainable practices of aquaponics and hydroponics. Through hands-on learning experiences, students will gain valuable skills in STEM, environmental stewardship and entrepreneurship. Students will learn about the science behind aquaponic and hydroponic systems, their environmental benefits and their potential for addressing food sustainability. In addition, students will engage in practical, experiential learning through the setup and maintenance of these systems. Due to lack of funding, Jarrett Middle School does not currently have a school garden or farming programs on its campus. With the help of a Voya Unsung Heroes grant, the school can purchase the necessary equipment to launch the program and introduce students to the importance of sustainability and living a healthy lifestyle. In addition to promoting healthy food choices, the program will provide students with skills they can apply either at home or possibly in a future career.
