Roth's winning program, "What's Under there? ROVs Explore Underwater Habitats," is the first of its kind for students at North Gulfport. Students in the program will participate in a hydrology study at a nearby creek and learn how to build Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) with waterproof video cameras to observe aquatic life there. They will collect information about the organisms that live in the creek and compete in various obstacle courses with their ROVs along the Gulf Coast. The winners will receive a National Geographic Exploration trip to the Galapagos Islands where they will have the opportunity to use their ROVs in tropical waters. Ro th, who lives in Ocean Springs, hopes the project and experience will show the students that technology can be used in science.
