Germano’s innovative teaching idea, “Making Student Scientists,” is focused on transforming students into scientists by giving them the tools, hands-on activities, exposure to real scientists, and chances to design their own experiments. Students will not only improve their knowledge of geology, but they also will see how rocks and soils are used in their everyday lives by solving real problems as “scientists.” Students will videoconference with real geologists to learn what they do and how they solve issues they encounter, and will then become their own scientists by creating a geology experiment and sharing their results. They also will have the chance to get outside and use real geological tools to explore earth science careers. In addition to learning the science content, Germano believes this will benefit students by giving them a real connection to geology, why it's important to their lives, and help them to discover future career options in the field.
