Anacita Sugalan

Sugalan’s innovative teaching idea, “Big Sister, Big Brother Mentor,” is focused on building a mentoring program to promote literacy at Kennedy Middle School. The sixth-grade students will mentor the elementary school fifth graders by reading books to them that these elementary students would like to read. Sugalan believes this will benefit both groups of students by not only improving their reading levels and comprehension, but by encouraging them to excel in all areas of school. Even further, the program hopes to create future leaders, by teaching responsibility and accountability in being part of a program separate from day-to-day classes.
