Erwin Elementary

Nipe's winning "Elementary Graphic Arts" program is an introductory unit to Microsoft Publisher and GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP). It is a cross-curriculum unit of study that combines fine arts with technology, science and language arts. The initial program will involve researching an endangered species using technology and traditional means, creating an educational pamphlet about the animal with each class creating their own book of poetry. Each student will write a Haiku (a form of Japanese poetry) about nature. Using Chinese watercolors as inspiration, students will create an illustration for their poem using either GIMP or Microsoft Publisher to design, in their personal style, a page for the class book. Ultimately, Nipe hopes to give the students a basic knowledge of computer graphic software so they will have an advantage in enhancing their future presentations and projects throughout their educational careers. Nipe, a science and technology specialist, lives in Rock Hill.
