Amber Pitts
Pitts’ innovative teaching idea, “Bars for Bethune Melody Making,” focuses on bringing pitched instruments to Bethune Elementary School. Due to the lack of instruments, currently students must practice the music on a paper xylophone when there are not sufficient real instruments for students to play on. Providing instruments to students will allow them to experience hands-on melodies, perform selected musical pieces, and create their own music. Students will be able to perform at local events showcasing their talents. The Voya grant will be used in the purchase of the much-needed instruments changing the ratio of students to barred instruments from 25:15 to 25:21. By having an almost one-to-one instrument experience during music class, Pitts hopes to give students the opportunity to explore music and expand their own creative potential.
