Fonseca’s innovative teaching idea, “Moving through Maps,” is focused on linking physical education and social studies. On the outside pavement of Caldwell Middle School, students will use a stencil to draw and then paint oversized maps of the United States and the world. This will allow students to actually see the maps and encourage learning as they move from state to state or landform to landform. These large, painted maps will be located in the play yard area so that all students, teachers and community members can use them. In addition, new textbooks will be purchased for each student in the fifth grade to use in their social studies class.
