Allison Godshall

2004
New York, NY
School of the Future
Godshall's "Green Roof Project" establishes a vegetated rooftop on the school's 12-story building. Green Roofs go beyond typical rooftop container gardens and have the potential for microclimate changes and positive environmental impacts in urban areas. Ninth grade Integrated Science students are involved in developing the Green Roof and conducting experiments on runoff and temperature. Students gain an understanding of ecology, biology, horticulture, meteorology and soil science. The school's Green Roof is included in the data sample for GLOBE, a worldwide organization that collects climatological data, and inspires other New York City schools to develop their own Green Roofs.
