Global Community High School

The "Global Gazette" is the winning program created by Tsironis to start a journalism class at the Global Community High School and help Limited English Proficiency (LEP) students practice their English-speaking skills. For the program, students will write, edit, and publish a newspaper for the school. They will learn about newspaper style and format, questioning and reporting, and the value of ethical journalism. Participants will have the opportunity to experience the roles of editor, reporter, editorial writer, photographer, and publisher while creating the English-language newspaper. Throughout the program, students will also increase their proficiency in writing in English, be encouraged to write about topics that are interesting to them, and verbally present their writing to other people. The goal is that the journalism class will grow each year into a more advanced journalism course and expand from publishing in print to publishing online and ultimately creating a video broadcast format. Tsironis, who lives in Las Vegas, hopes that through the class, students will also be exposed to new career options.
