Brecek’s and Dunn’s innovative teaching idea, “Flipping Algebra,” is designed to improve the experience and grades of ninth graders taking algebra. Based on a flipped classroom seminar the teachers attended last year, they are convinced that by shifting their classroom, they can have more contact time with students to help with their math deficits. Instead of instructing at school, teachers will now create content that students can access at home to learn the content, but then have students come to class to get the support they need to truly learn the skills. By doing this, Brecek and Dunn believe they can free up approximately 30 minutes a week that can be better spent with students digging deeper into the content and learning algebra more effectively than they are currently. Ultimately, this change in teaching will not only impact their ninth grade year and possibly their class grade, but will help them in higher math classes too.
